▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Howard Link
CANON: D. Gray-Man
CANON POINT: Chapter 226
AGE: 20
BACKGROUND: Link’s backstory/most of canon history so far can be found HERE.
I will be taking him from after chapter 226, after he confronted Neah and helped him in temporarily fending off the Millennium Earl and other Noah. After Allen regains consciousness and control of his body Link vanishes from the scene and will be arriving in Prismatica not long after this point.
PERSONALITY: Link is a sober young man who typically comes off as aloof and straight-laced, rarely flashing a smile or allowing himself to relax. He enjoys order and rules, taking great pride in his work and always striving to complete his duties efficiently. His tendency to try and reign in those around him often can be seen as naggy and troublesome to anyone on the receiving end of it, even though the man himself generally has good intentions behind his stern attitude. For all the frustration his personality can cause Link is steadfast and loyal, constantly pushing himself well past his own limits to see every mission through to the end. Regardless of the tension amongst his fellow members of the Order he always tries to keep the peace and align others to their common goal even though this usually earns him frustration. But this parental sternness doesn’t mean that he is completely devoid of wit, as Link has been shown to have a dry sense of humor and he certainly isn’t afraid to argue with or tease someone (barring that they aren’t in a position of authority).
Of course his almost single-minded attitude towards work combined with his attempt to stay objective can cause the Crow to seem cold and harsh, as he will often prioritize duty over the emotional/human toll that his actions can cause. He is very much a man who believes in focusing on the big picture over the individual pieces, even where his own wellbeing is concerned. He is always willing to risk his own safety for his ideals without complaint, never hesitating to throw himself right into the fray even if he’s the last man standing. Despite being regularly surrounded by Exorcists who all have some sort of supernatural ability he is able to not only keep up but even occasionally proves more stable than them, surviving against seemingly overwhelming odds through sheer force of will alone on several occasions.
After having been brought off the streets and instructed by Malcolm C. Lvellie he has come to greatly revere the man, despite his unpopularity and infamy within the Order. It’s clear that much of his firmness was picked up from Lvellie, whom he even emulates down to his penchant for baking. But where Lvellie is much more harsh and austere Link does have a softer and more personable side to him although he rarely lets his guard slip enough for it to be seen. This respect extends to most figures of authority above him in Central, but the faith Link places in those in positions of power can be seen as a double-edged sword. For as much as that belief sustains and gives him purpose it can also be a detriment in that this devotion can make him blind to the corruption behind the scenes, leaving him with little to stand on without it.
While Link used to believe that Lvellie could do no wrong and followed the word of the Order to the absolute letter he has begun to have doubts over the recent months. Despite his training as a Crow he takes no joy in violence or killing and is not a zealot, leading him to feel conflicted the more he is pushed into extreme actions in the name of the Church’s goals, especially as it has placed him between Allen Walker and the Fourteenth. Up until being assigned to work at Allen’s side Link had more or less only seen one side of the Order’s fight against the darker forces of the world which lent to his narrow scope of reality and rigid beliefs.
Over time he’s had his faith shaken multiple times, especially after the revelation that there are monsters even within the core of the Black Order and the divisions he once considered so black and white are much more gray. It was thanks to his own actions that the Third Exorcists (who he grew up with) became merged with Akuma and subsequently taken by the Millennium Earl, and the guilt that came from this was the first time he truly questioned whether or not what he had done was truly right. He has since come to doubt whether or not he is truly doing the right thing by siding with the Fourteenth and allowing him to take over Allen’s body, finding himself more attached to his charge than he ever intended to be. He is torn between wanting to believe that his duties are for the benefit of mankind and wanting to see Allen triumph over the destiny that has been dictated for him. Despite trying to remain objective his whole life it is clear that Link is no longer able to remain on the sidelines and- sooner or later- will have to actually choose his alliance.
POWERS/ABILITIES: It could be argued that Howard Link is one of the strongest human characters in the series, able to hold his own against Noah and Akuma alike without having Innocence to rely upon. Aside from being extremely observant and resourceful as an Inspector Link is also much more capable in a fight than one might expect from a man who looks much more like he belongs behind a desk than on a battlefield. As a member of the Crows he has been trained in combat and magic skills from a very young age, able to support Exorcists and carry out duties behind the scenes at the behest of the Church.
After nearly dying at the hands of Apocryphos Link was transferred the Atuuda through its previous user, giving him the ability to use a portion of his life force to heal someone else. Some of the specific techniques Link uses, including more information on the Atuuda, can be found HERE.
He’s also a very good baker.
INVENTORY: Set of talismans, two (2) retractable blades, rosary
